What a Norway trip actually costs in 2027

Hotels, the coastal bus, the long train east, the extras and the food bill for nine days in western Norway, priced live, with what a guided tour costs. From the company that sells the trip.

Per person, with your own room, the coastal bus and the train, nine days in Norway, from Bergen down the coast to Stavanger for the Gladmat food festival and then by train to Oslo, starts at $1,755. A more comfortable version, with breakfast every morning, a hotel near the harbour and two of the extras, comes to $2,500. Flights and most of your food are on top, and in Norway the food is a real number.

Every price on this page that is ours is read live from the trip we have on sale when you load the page. Where a figure belongs to someone else, we name them and the day we checked it. We sell this trip, so weigh the comparisons with that in mind.

The lowest column is a complete trip: three central hotels, the same bus and train, the same festival and the same long June evenings as everyone else on the departure.

The four hotel levels, 20 to 28 June 2027

The price is per person with your own room. Two people travelling together can share a room and each pays the sharing price, which is lower at most levels.

The first level leaves out breakfast, which is how it stays at that price. Norwegian hotel breakfasts are large, and at the other three levels they are a meal you no longer have to buy. Per person over eight nights, the step from the first level to the second costs $645, so weigh it against eight breakfasts and a hotel by the harbour.

Hotel prices follow each hotel's own rates for these nights. A level that fills can move to another hotel of the same standard, and when no hotel at a level has a room left the level shows as sold out here rather than at an old price.

What the price includes

  • Eight nights at the level you choose: three in Bergen, three in Stavanger, two in Oslo.
  • The coastal bus to Stavanger. Kystbussen, city centre to city centre down the E39 in about four and a half hours, with two fjord crossings by ferry included in the fare. It is a scenic route sold as a bus.
  • The Sørlandsbanen to Oslo. About eight hours east across the mountains and along the south coast, with reserved seats. We do not fly this leg because the train is one of the best things on the trip.
  • Your Guide, in the app. Your Route day by day, where you are staying, when the bus leaves, our recommendations and the Your Group chat. The assistant in the app answers at any hour, and people at Guideless cover 8 AM to 10 PM in your local time while you travel.

Gladmat, Norway's biggest food festival, runs on Stavanger's harbour from 23 to 26 June 2027, and you arrive on its opening afternoon. Entry is free and you pay for what you eat, so it costs nothing to include and nothing to skip.

There is no guide on this trip, and the departure takes at most 16 travellers. The group opens in the app as soon as you book and meets, if it likes, on the first evening on Bryggen in Bergen.

Each is sold at the operator's own public price or below it, never above. The helicopter is sold as the whole aircraft because that is how the operator sells it: you book it for your group or not at all.

Some of the best things on this route cost nothing. You can walk down Fløyen through the woods, climb Ulriken or ride its cable car on your own, wander Gamle Stavanger's white timber streets, and walk up the roof of the Oslo opera house.

Food and drink: what things cost

Norway is expensive to eat and drink in, and food is the one part of the trip we cannot fix a price for, so here are the numbers. These are typical prices in each city as collected by Numbeo, with dollars at Norges Bank's rate of NOK 9.54 to the dollar on 13 October 2026.

Typical priceBergenStavangerOslo
A meal at a simple restaurantNOK 224 (about $23)NOK 229 ($24)NOK 200 ($21)
A three-course dinner for two, without drinksNOK 1,300 ($136)NOK 917 ($96)NOK 1,200 ($126)
A pint of local beer in a barNOK 119 ($12)NOK 130 ($14)NOK 112 ($12)
A cappuccinoNOK 52 ($5)NOK 59 ($6)NOK 57 ($6)

Drinks are where the bill climbs. A half-litre of beer from a Bergen supermarket is about NOK 35 ($4), and a mid-range bottle of wine about NOK 182 ($19); wine and spirits are sold only in the state Vinmonopolet shops, not in supermarkets.

On those figures, eating at a simple place twice a day comes to about NOK 450 ($47) per person in Bergen. Lunch at a simple place, your half of a three-course dinner for two and one beer comes to about NOK 990 ($104). Over eight days that is roughly $375 to $830 on top of the trip, plus breakfast if you choose the first level.

The cheapest good meals are at the fish market in Bergen, the stalls at Gladmat and the supermarkets, which sell decent bread, cheese and smoked fish. Choose a level with breakfast if you would rather not think about the mornings.

Flights

You fly into Bergen Flesland and home from Oslo Gardermoen, so search for the two one-way legs together as a multi-city ticket. The Bybanen light rail runs from the Bergen terminal into the centre in about 45 minutes. In Oslo the Flytoget airport express takes about 20 minutes and runs every ten.

What a guided tour of Norway costs

No guided tour we found follows this exact route. These three all include Norway's west coast and are the nearest published comparisons, per person, before flights, as their websites showed them on 5 October 2026.

These tours include things ours does not: a person with you, a run of meals, and organised activities such as glacier walks, kayaking and fjord cruises. If you want the days filled and someone to lead them, they are built for that. Ours is built for the opposite: the travel and the beds are done, and the days are yours.

What it costs to do it yourself

Entirely possible, and on price alone usually less than buying it from us.

  • The coastal bus. Fjord Norway lists the ordinary adult Kystbussen fare from Bergen to Stavanger at NOK 199, varying by departure (Fjord Norway).
  • The train. Fjord Norway lists the adult ticket from Stavanger to Oslo with Go-Ahead at NOK 1,197; cheaper advance fares appear when they are released (Fjord Norway). Both checked 5 October 2026.
  • The hotels. You can book any hotel on this route yourself. Our price for a level is usually more than the same hotels would cost you on their own websites, and that difference, with the bus, the train, the app and the support, is what we charge. There is no separate booking fee on top.

What doing it yourself costs instead is the planning: one of your three hotels is in a festival week, the long train is worth booking as soon as seats are released, and if a connection fails on the day, sorting it out is yours. You also go without a group, which some people prefer.

Paying, and changing your mind

A deposit holds your place, and the balance is due about 60 days before departure. If you cancel, the refund on this departure is 90% at 90 days or more before departure, 70% from 60 to 89 days, 40% from 30 to 59 days, 20% from 15 to 29 days, and nothing in the last 14 days. An extra can have its own cutoff, which it shows before you buy it.

The trip runs from two travellers, so it does not wait on a minimum group to go ahead. Every trip is for travellers aged 18 and over.

Frequently asked

Is Norway expensive to visit?

For food and drink, yes: a meal at a simple restaurant costs around $21 to $24 and a pint around $12 to $14 (the table above). The hotels and the long journeys are what we fix in advance: eight nights with your own room, the coastal bus and the train start at $1,755 per person. The easiest ways to bring the daily cost down are a level with breakfast, lunch from the fish market or a supermarket, and buying drinks in shops rather than bars.

How much money do I need per day in Norway?

On this trip, with the hotels and the travel paid, plan on about $47 a day for food eating simply and about $104 with a proper dinner and a drink. A single ticket on Bergen's buses and light rail is NOK 49 ($5).

Eight hours on a train?

Yes, and people take the Sørlandsbanen as an excursion in its own right. If you would rather fly that leg, the flight is yours to book; we do not sell flights on this trip.

How much daylight is there in late June?

Almost all of it. Bergen gets about nineteen hours and it never gets properly dark, so the evenings are long and the day is as long as you want it to be.

Do I need to be fit?

Not for the trip itself, which is three cities, a bus and a train. Preikestolen is about four hours of real walking there and back, and Ulriken is a climb unless you take the cable car.

Can I travel alone?

Yes. Your own room is the price we quote, so travelling alone costs no supplement.
