An Intrepid alternative: what a group leader gives you, and travelling without one
Intrepid runs small groups with a local leader. This is an honest look at what that leader does for you, what changes without one, and how the prices compare. From a company that sells the trip without the leader.
Intrepid Travel runs small-group trips with a local leader, across a long list of countries and at several levels of comfort. If you are looking for an alternative, the useful question is whether you want the leader. This page tries to answer that honestly, including the parts where the leader is worth paying for. It is written by Guideless, which sells trips without one.
Intrepid's details below are from its own website as it read on 5 October 2026.
What an Intrepid leader does
Intrepid describes its leaders as more than tour guides. In its own words, they will "get you from one destination to the next", and also "help you navigate public transportation, bridge language barriers, make restaurant reservations, organise museum passes". They "can suggest the best ways to fill in your free time at each destination and even help arrange it for you" (Intrepid, our leaders).
That is a real service. A leader is the person who notices the train is cancelled before you do, who knows which of the three restaurants on the square is good, and who can explain to the hotel in its own language that your room is wrong. They also hold the group together, which matters most if you are travelling alone.
Intrepid says most of its trips run with 12 to 16 travellers and average around 10. Rooms are twin share on all trips, with solo travellers paired with another traveller of the same gender, and a room of your own is available at extra cost on most trips. The minimum age on most trips is 15 (Intrepid FAQ).
What changes without a leader
On a Guideless trip there is no leader and no guide. We book the hotels and the trains, and the rest of the work a leader does is split between the app, our support and you.
| What a leader does | Who does it on Guideless |
|---|---|
| Gets the group from one city to the next | The trains are booked with reserved seats, and the tickets and times are in your app. You get yourself to the station. |
| Helps with public transport | Your Route tells you how to get from the airport and between hotel and station. The day-to-day metro or tram is yours. |
| Bridges the language | You do, with the help of your phone. |
| Makes restaurant reservations | Our recommendations are in the app for each city. You book the table, or join whoever in Your Group is booking one. |
| Suggests and arranges free-time activities | Recommendations in the app, and optional extras with their own price that you can add when you book or later. |
| Sorts out problems on the spot | You message us. The assistant in the app answers at any hour, and people at Guideless cover 8 AM to 10 PM in your local time. We fix it from where we are; nobody comes to find you. |
| Holds the group together | Your Group chat, which opens as soon as you book, and an optional meet-up on the first evening. |
If that last column reads as more effort than you want on holiday, a led trip is the better choice, and Intrepid is a good one to look at.
What you get in return
- Your own days. Nothing is scheduled after the trains and the check-ins. You do not wait for the group, and the group does not wait for you.
- Your own room. It is the price we quote. Sharing is an option for two people who book together, and we never pair you with a stranger.
- Your choice of hotel. Each trip has four levels, from a simple well-placed hotel to the best room in town, and everyone is on the same trip whichever they choose.
- Only the extras you want. A boat day, a wine afternoon or a helicopter flight each has its own price, and you pay for none of them unless you choose them.
Prices, as each company publishes them
These are not the same trips, and the prices are quoted on different bases, so read the table as two products side by side and make no assumption about which is cheaper for what you want.

When Intrepid is the better answer
- You are going somewhere unfamiliar, or somewhere hard. A leader earns their place most where the language, the transport or the customs are a real obstacle. Our trips are in France and Norway, where independent travel is easy; Intrepid goes to far more places.
- You want a ready-made group. A leader and a shared programme usually bring a dozen strangers together faster than a group chat does.
- You are travelling with someone under 18. Intrepid takes travellers from 15 with an adult on most trips. Every Guideless trip is 18 and over.
- You do not want to make decisions. That is a perfectly good reason to choose a led trip.
When Guideless might suit you better
- You have travelled independently before and liked it, but do not want to plan the hotels and trains yourself.
- You want your own room without a supplement.
- You would like a group to be there, and also to be free to ignore it.
- You want to choose your hotel level, and pay for extras one at a time.
Trips run from two travellers, so a departure does not wait on a minimum group to go ahead.
