Alternatives to EF Ultimate Break, compared on rooms, days and price

What EF Ultimate Break includes, who it suits, and what to look at instead if you want your own room or your own days. Written by a company that sells one of the alternatives.

EF Ultimate Break runs group trips for travellers aged 18 to 35: a Tour Director, a planned itinerary, a room shared with another traveller, and a price that bundles most of it together. It is a clear, popular product and a good answer for a lot of people. This page is for the people it does not quite fit, and it is written by Guideless, which sells one of the alternatives. We have tried to say plainly where EF is the better choice.

All of EF's details below are from its own website as it read on 5 October 2026.

What EF Ultimate Break is

EF's France page lists what its trips include: a Tour Director and local guides, sightseeing and excursions, entrance to the main attractions, metro passes in the big cities, hand-picked accommodation, a couple of group dinners, and a private coach between cities (EF Ultimate Break, France). It also offers interest-free payment plans and a 30-day grace period for cancelling.

Its closest trip to the south of France is South of France Getaway: Nice, Toulon & Sainte-Maxime, ten days and eight nights, from $2,729 before flights. The departure from 28 May to 6 June 2027 is listed at $2,979. It includes eight breakfasts and two dinners, the Tour Director, all transport on the trip, a catamaran cruise, a day trip to Saint-Tropez and kayaking in the Calanques, with free days in Toulon and Sainte-Maxime (EF, South of France Getaway).

On rooms, the trip page says: "Stay with one other EF traveler (or upgrade to solo)", and that rooms are "group share style, separated by gender", with your own bed and an en suite bathroom. On age, EF describes its trips as built for 18 to 35-year-olds, and this one as best for 25 to 35, with most travellers between 20 and 28.

The two trips are not the same trip. EF's runs along the coast to Toulon and Sainte-Maxime with activities built in. Ours runs from Nice to Avignon to Paris with the hotels and trains booked and nothing else scheduled. The prices are each company's own, for its own route, and we are not claiming either is the cheaper way to see France.

When EF is the better answer

  • You are 18 to 25 and want the whole thing arranged. A Tour Director, a full programme and a group your own age is exactly what EF is built to do.
  • You want the activities included. The catamaran, the Saint-Tropez day and the kayaking are in EF's price. On our trips each extra is a separate decision with its own price.
  • You are happy to share a room with someone you have not met. If a roommate sounds like part of the fun, EF's way of rooming suits you.
  • You want somebody physically there. We do not have a person on the ground with the group. If that matters to you, a led trip is the right choice.

When you might want something else

  • You are over 35, or close to it. EF's range stops at 35. Ours has no upper limit; every trip is 18 and over.
  • You want your own room. On our trips your own room is the price we quote. Sharing is an option for two people who book together, and we never pair you with a stranger.
  • You want your days. On a led programme, free time sits between the planned parts. On ours, the hotels and the trains are booked and the days are empty on purpose. Your Route in the app has our recommendations for each city, and Your Group chat is where people decide whether to go to the market together or not.
  • You want to pick your hotel. We sell four levels on each trip, from a well-located simple hotel to the best room in town, and people at every level are on the same trip.

What Guideless includes

The hotels at the level you choose, the trains between cities, and Your Guide in the app: Your Route day by day, maps, recommendations and the group chat. The assistant in the app answers at any hour, and people at Guideless cover 8 AM to 10 PM in your local time while you travel. Everything else is an optional extra with its own price. On Southern France those are a boat day for your group, a Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine afternoon, a dinner in Paris at L'Ambassade d'Auvergne, an airport car and an extra night in Paris.

There is no guide. That is the product, and it is the biggest difference from EF. If something goes wrong you message us and we sort it out from where we are; nobody is standing beside you.

Trips run from two travellers, so a departure does not wait on a minimum group, and every trip is for adults, 18 and over.

Other alternatives worth a look

  • Contiki is the other big 18 to 35 brand, with a similar shape: a Trip Manager, a planned programme, and a twin or multi-share room by default (Contiki FAQ, checked 5 October 2026). We compare it in alternatives to Contiki.
  • Intrepid runs small groups led by a local leader, with an 18 to 35 range on some trips and twin-share rooms as standard. See an alternative to Intrepid.
  • Doing it yourself costs the least on paper and the most in planning. Guided tour, do it yourself, or Guideless sets out the three honestly.

Frequently asked

Is Guideless for people under 25?

Yes, from 18. But there is no Tour Director and no programme of activities, so if you want one run for you, EF or Contiki will suit you better.

Will I be the oldest, or the youngest?

We do not group trips by age, so a departure can include people in their twenties and people in their fifties. The group chat opens as soon as you book, so you can see who is coming.

Can I travel alone?

Yes. Your own room is the default, so there is no single supplement and no assigned roommate.

What does the whole trip cost?

The Southern France cost guide and the Norway cost guide break it down, live, level by level. The trips themselves are Southern France and Norway.

EF Ultimate Break's details and prices are its own, as its website showed them on 5 October 2026; check them there before you decide. Our prices on this page are read live from the trips on sale, per person, own room unless it says sharing.
