Monaco Grand Prix group trips: what your options actually are

Four ways to do the Monaco Grand Prix with other people, compared honestly — including when one of the other three is the better answer.

There are four ways to go to the Monaco Grand Prix with other people, and they are genuinely different products rather than different prices for the same thing. This page lays them out, including where we are the wrong answer.

Escorted tour

A coach, a schedule and a guide. You are told where to be and when, and somebody else handles every decision.

Right for you if you want to switch your brain off entirely, or it is your first time travelling in Europe and that feels like a lot.

Wrong for you if the phrase "the coach leaves at 7:45" makes your heart sink.

Hospitality package

Sold by the venue operators — a yacht day, a terrace, a grandstand with catering — usually with a hotel attached. The race is the whole product.

Right for you if the viewing is the reason you are going and the rest is logistics.

Wrong for you if you also wanted four days on the Riviera, because these are priced around the race and not around the week.

Doing it yourself

Entirely possible, and thousands manage it. Book a hotel in Nice, buy a ticket, take the train in.

Right for you if you enjoy the planning, you are going with people you already know, and you want maximum control.

Wrong for you if you are starting in September for a June race and have not discovered yet that race-week hotels sell out first, ticket resale is confusing, and the good nights book out months ahead.

Self-guided group — what we do

We book the hotels, the trains and whatever extras you choose, and then leave you alone. There is no guide. The group is there on the first evening and at the harbour after the podium; the rest of the weekend is yours.

The part people find hardest to picture: the group does not do the same things. On race day some of ours are on a yacht, some are standing on the Rock, some are at a beach in Villefranche. Same trip, same hotels, same group chat, different Sunday. Tiers sit inside one group — the traveler in the budget hotel in Nice and the traveler inside Monte Carlo are on the same departure — which an escorted operator cannot do, because you cannot run one coach at two price points.

Right for you if you want the logistics solved and the days unplanned, and you would like people around without being timetabled with them.

Wrong for you if you want somebody to make every decision, or you want to be alone.

What it costs

About $2,000–$16,000 a person for five nights, and almost all of that spread is two choices: where you sleep and how you watch the race. The full cost breakdown has the real numbers for every tier and every viewing option, including the ones we do not sell.

Frequently asked

Can I book for two and still be in the group?

Yes. Most people book in pairs. Rooming is your own by default and you can share if you want to.

Do I have to do the group things?

No, and nothing is scheduled that you have to decline. The first evening is optional and so is everything after it.

Is it cheaper to do it myself?

At the very bottom, slightly — if you are happy with a hostel and a standing ticket and you do the work. At every other level the difference is small and the fortnight of planning is real.
